Subspecialty

Dr. Fiore specializes in the treatment of congenital and degenerative disorders of the entire spine, from the base of the skull to the tip of the tailbone, as well as traumatic injury to this area. He also specializes in the treatment of adult and pediatric scoliosis, neck and cervical spine disorders, lumbar disc disease, spinal stenosis and reconstructive deformities. He is Board Certified and is a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Scoliosis Research Society and The North American Spine Society.

Education

After graduating from San Jose University with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology, Dr. Fiore attended Chicago Medical School, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He then completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. In 1992, he completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at the Tulane Louisville Spine Fellowship. He trained with doctors from the Lethenman Spine Center in Louisville, Kentucky, including the highly respected surgeons Richard T. Holt, MD and John J. Guarnashelli. His work with Dr. Holt involved major scoliosis and reconstruction surgery, and his major focus with neurosurgeon Dr. Guarnashelli was neck/cervical spinal surgery, including cervical disc herniation, stenosis and anterior and posterior surgery for related conditions. His time spent at Tulane University included a wide range of spinal surgeries.

Career

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Fiore’s main interest has been patient care. He has been the Director of Spinal Surgery at Advanced Orthopaedics his entire career. During that time, he has operated at all the major hospitals in the Richmond area. He has treated spinal disorders including cervical disc herniations; cervical stenosis; cervical trauma; scoliosis of the entire spine in both children and adults; lower back problems including herniated discs, stenosis and deformity; as well as tumors and infection. He has helped us grow our team to the point that we can diagnose and treat all aspects of spinal care with our surgeons, pain management, and spinal diagnostic specialists.

Dr. Fiore has also spent time serving the community by conducting scoliosis screenings in the Greater Richmond area, and by training school nurses to carry out the evaluations. He has taught physicians spinal surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, and has shared his knowledge at the annual South Florida Spinal meetings for nearly ten years.

Dr. Fiore has also been involved in research and development in both orthopaedic and spinal disorders and treatment, starting with foot biomechanics and cartilage regeneration at MCV to the development of several devices to improve spinal surgery. Devices he has helped develop include a cervical plate that is used to stabilize the spine while healing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, as well as several lumbar spinal fusion. He is presently working on an interbody fusion cage and on a system to improve intra-operative spinal monitoring.

Through all these endeavors, his focus has been on the patient, as he stresses one-on-one care and early diagnosis.

Awards and Publication

Dr. Fiore has been published in several medical journals, including Spine: State of the Art Reviews and the Journal of the Foot and Ankle. He received the MCV Resident Research Paper Award for three years in a row (1988, 1989, 1990), and was named to the AOA Medical Honors Fraternity in 1985.
