Dr. Decker heads our Interventional Pain Medicine Center, where he uses treatment modalities such as medications, exercises, physical therapy, spinal cord stimulation and various coping strategies to enable patients to diminish their pain and adapt their lifestyles.

Education

Dr. Decker graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a B.A. in Zoology and Chemistry and received his M.S. from Purdue University in Veterinary Microbiology. His research resulted in the discovery of high molecular weight antibodies, which caused hemolytic anemia resulting from spirochete infections. He went on to receive his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and served his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, New York. He also completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA.

Career

Dr. Decker was one of the first physicians in his specialty to surgically implant spinal cord stimulating systems and pumps infusing narcotics into the fluid around the spinal cord. He has taken part in many regional and national education programs and has proctored many residents and fellows in these procedures. As a consultant to device manufacturers, he has advised engineers in product development and has assisted physicians in the proper application of these technologies.

Dr. Decker has been actively involved with the American Board of Pain Medicine. In addition to being a board member, he served a two-year term as president and is now the secretary-treasurer. He continues to sit on the Credentials Committee and on the Exam Council.
