Subspecialty
Dr. Higgs has an extensive background in sports medicine, shoulder surgery and knee surgery. He is Fellowship Trained and Subspecialty Certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Higgs is a subspecialist in the treatment of injuries sustained during athletic activities. In treating athletic injuries, Dr. Higgs takes a comprehensive and compassionate approach to the evaluation, diagnosis and the treatment of the athlete using state-of-the-art reconstructive methods that include both nonsurgical and surgical techniques. In addition to the athlete, Dr. Higgs treats injuries sustained to the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle in all patients. His areas of expertise include: complex shoulder reconstruction for rotator cuff injury, shoulder instability, acute traumatic shoulder injury and shoulder arthritis, knee ligament reconstruction, knee cartilage restoration, knee arthritis in the young adult, traumatic knee injuries, acute treatment of sports medicine injuries and advanced arthroscopic techniques.
Education
Dr. Higgs earned a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia before attending medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Â He completed his residency and internship at Columbia, earned a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine/Shoulder Surgery at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital, and received another fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery Research at University of California San Diego.
Career
Dr. Higgs has served as Team Physician for Harvard University Athletic Teams, the New England Patriots Professional Football Team, the Boston Bruins Professional Hockey Team, and the New England Revolution Professional Soccer Team. During his Residency at Columbia University, he served as Chief of Physicians for Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Yankees (MLB), New York Knicks (NBA) and the New York Rangers (NHL).
Currently, Dr. Higgs is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. He is the Chief Team Physician for the Richmond Raiders Professional Arena Football Team, and has been the Chief Team Physician for each Professional Arena Football Team in Richmond including The Richmond Revolution, The Richmond Bandits and The Richmond Speed.
Dr. Higgs has a strong commitment to community service and serves as the team physician for Henrico High School and Highland Springs High School Athletic Programs. He also served as a Team Physician for the Richmond Rhythm IBL Basketball team, as the Head Team Physician for the Virginia High School Football State Championships while they played in Richmond, and as the Head Team Physician for the East West College Football All-Star Games.
Dr. Higgs currently serves as the Co-Director of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Centers.
Dr. Higgs served his active duty obligation for a medical school academic scholarship as a Major in the U.S. Army, where he became a highly decorated officer. He served in Seoul, South Korea as the Assistant Chief and Acting Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the U.S. Army 121 General Hospital; Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the U.S. Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany; and served as The Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the 67th U.S. Army Combat Support Hospital (Deployed) in Taszar, Hungary during the Bosnian war.
Awards and Publication
Dr. Higgs is widely published in medical literature and has lectured at numerous national and international meetings. He is the recipient of the Frank E. Stinchfield Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery, The Orren D. Baab Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery, the Columbia University-Resident Clinical Research Award/Grant, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of New York’s Best Resident Research Award. While serving in the U.S. Army, Dr. Higgs received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal, and twice received the Overseas Service Medal, among others.
